This past weekend, I had the pleasure of smoking a 2011 limited edition Cohiba. The 1966 Edición Limitada 2011 commemorates Cohiba’s 45th anniversary and is named for the year that Cohiba — the flagship brand of Habanos — was created.
Cohiba used to be Fidel Castro’s personal smoke. The cigars only became commercially available in 1982. Prior to this, Cohiba’s were only available through diplomatic channels.
This cigar was absolutely delicious. Coffee and cocoa beans were at the forefront of the taste profile. I also found there to be creaminess to the cigar with notes of butter that lasted throughout the entire smoke.
It took me about an hour and twenty minutes to smoke this cigar, but 60 minutes should be sufficient as I really savoured the second half.
One notable feature of this Cohiba was the wrapper, which seemed darker than a Behike or a Siglo VI. This is reportedly typical of cigars released for the Edición Limitada program. The Edición Limitada program was officially launched in 2000 and usually creates hot auction items — this cigar was certainly one of them…
