Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India is a statutory requirement under the Companies Act, 2013. Specifically Section 135 and Schedule VII of the Act provide for the CSR compliances along with the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014. India is one of the world’s leading nations to have passed such an innovative piece of legislation.

In a unique collaborative effort, CIIE, along with other leading organizations and individuals working in the CSR space, are putting together a series of papers on Laws related to Corporate Social Responsibility in India, starting with two publications. The First Issue focuses on a brief summary of the CSR provision and the analysis thereof.

India’s CSR laws are new and still evolving. Therefore, there are many areas that lack clarity. The Second Issue focuses on some of the confusing and debatable issues related to CSR.

The Finance Act, 2014 has brought a very radical & far-reaching amendment, as far as CSR expenditures are concerned. The Third Issue focuses on Tax Implication of CSR Expenditure done by corporates itself or through donation to specified entities.
