Taking Film Criticism on Medium to a New Level

I when started writing on medium, I fell in love pretty quick. I had a home to share my thoughts on cinema without being stuck in an internet vacuum. No longer was I left with only the well meaning comments from friends on social media, who might not share the level of passion I had on a subject matter. I found a place where individuals, who were seeking out film and media criticism, found me.

It’s was the brainy internet equivalent of a “meet-cute.”

As time went on, I found articles I had put my heart and soul into read, commented on and, in the weirdest twist of fate, shared by complete strangers. When my “10 Films of 2013" post garnered over 2000 people who had actually read the whole thing (or at least scrolled through it completly) I was flabbergasted. The internet is an open field, but generally there are too many people shouting for anyone to actually get heard. People were actually responding to my work. It’s was (and is) a weird, but good, feeling.

But then there was a bit of a shift.

I opened my email to find that Medium had contacted me…well, all of us. Their policies on collections were changing. Soon, you’d no longer be able to submit your work to multiple collections (getting you multiple opprtunites to have your work read) and, in fact, you wouldn’t even be able to submit to a single one if you didn’t either own it or have permission from the owner/editor of the collection.

To paraphrase Old Ben Kenobi…

“I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of medium writers were sharing their thoughts, but were suddenly silenced.”

Suddenly, the reading numbers dropped. It was once again impossible to share with the widest audience. Niche collections grew stagnate, unable to obtain new articles or readers. Things had not changed for the better.

Seeing what lay ahead, I contacted several of the largest followed collections on film and TV with one simple idea…

Let’s merge our work and unite as one.

Enter Fade In:

It’s a new Medium collection run by an editorial collective of passionate filmmakers, writers, and artists, now looking to obtain the best writers on the web for their criticism and dialogue about film, television, and other digital media (video games, web video, etc).
