Female Introverts As Main Characters

Female introverts are not often the heroines of great stories. There is an assumption that women are naturally passive and for a female character to be interesting she must be a “force of nature”. People think of introverts (male or female) as people waiting around for life to happen to them instead of those who forcefully grab life by the collar.

This could not be further from the truth.

This is why it was so thrilling that two top-rated shows with excellent writing decided to make powerful introverts their central characters.

Meet Rory Gilmore

When we first meet Rory she is a smart ambitious girl (she wants to be a journalist like Christiane Amanpour) who has an amazing relationship with her highly extroverted mother Lorelai. Rory’s mother had run away from a wealthy family when she became pregnant with Rory in high school. Lorelai wanted to live life on her own terms and worked her way up from being a hotel maid to executive manager.

Rory dreams of going to private school and Lorelai has to negotiate with her estranged…
