The Twitterverse is ablaze after the release of Maïmouna Doucouré’s Cuties on Netflix, calling for everyone to cancel their subscription to the popular streaming service.

Let’s just be honest here and now. No one is cancelling Netflix.

This brazen and arguably over the top suggestion comes after the bubbling controversies that began when the movies original US poster and synopsis came out in August, which surmised the movie as follows:

Amy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her feminity, defying her family’s traditions.

This was quickly changed, along with the poster, and apologies were made. But, when the film was finally released on September 8th, those biding their time were able to pick right back up where they started.

Unfortunately, in the social media era, outrage spreads like wildfire online, and many people began to conflate the artwork with the film, piling in to express their distaste that a movie that ‘sexualized children’ had been bought by Netflix. — Deadline (2020)
