As a lifelong film buff, I have been collecting film-related books since I was about 15 years old. I have several editions of movie compilation books, listicles, mini-bios, you name it. And one of those books is ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’ edited by Steven Jay Schneider, with contributions from several film critics. It is part of the 1001 Before You Die series of reference books, which also include ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die,’ ‘1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die’, among others…

There are currently 19 editions of ‘Movies,’ each updated to include the most recent worthy, must-see movies.

And here are all the 1001 movies featured in the current edition….

I’m kidding. But… it’s a lot of movies.

Omissions and inclusions

With each edition, some films understandably get left out; I remember being shocked that Mrs Miniver (1942), The Big Combo (1955), and The Hitcher (1986), among many others, didn’t make the list one particular edition. I checked the next edition, and… they weren’t there either. But that’s just how it is. For every movie that gets included, another needs to be taken out. They also review their previous lists to include movies that weren’t included the first…
