Let’s Talk About ‘A Ghost Story’

I’m really not sure what to make of this artistic exploration of grief.

In A Ghost Story, when a man dies, he returns to his home to connect with his mourning wife. Of course, part of what makes this film so interesting is that this particular ghost is wearing a large white sheet.

I really loved the first hour of this film. It’s quiet and contemplative. Though there’s not a lot of dialogue spoken between our two main characters, C (Casey Affleck) and M (Rooney Mara), we can tell the bond that they have. We see moments of sweet tenderness exchanged and other moments where tension is bubbling beneath the surface. A Ghost Story also takes us into some of the emotional distance they experience while living in the same house. Though life isn’t perfect for them, they have genuine affection for one another.

I am so impressed by David Lowery’s ability to bring all of the various artistic components together in this film to make the audience feel deeply about these characters.

Daniel Hart’s music in A Ghost Story is phenomenal. It plays such a large role in really creating the emotional tension in this film. It could’ve been easy for this story to seem extra silly — after all, the main character is a grown man draped in a giant white sheet. But the score does a phenomenal…
