‘Madame Web’ is Worse than I Expected

It’s a mess of a movie.

I’m not going to lie: I only watched Madame Web out of a somewhat morbid curiosity. I knew this movie was bad, and I wanted to see just how bad it was. It’s kind of like a train wreck — you want to look away but can’t.

To no one’s surprise, this movie is terrible, which is a shame because I think there’s some potential here for an interesting story.

Madame Web introduces us to Cassie Webb (Dakota Johnson), a woman with a tragic past who begins to see glimpses of the future. She has to learn to use her powers and overcome her past trauma in order to save three teenage girls.

This movie is pretty much a complete disaster. It’s hard to find anything positive to say about it. My biggest issue has to do with the screenplay which (unsurprisingly) went through extensive rewrites while filming. And you can feel how disjointed this film is while watching.

I think Madame Web is trying to accomplish too many things in a relatively short run-time. We first must meet Cassie, learn her tragic backstory, and meet the villain, Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim), and his backstory, in addition to three teenage girls who are instrumental to the plot.
