Navigating Netflix’s The Sea Beast (2022)
Stunning animation, strange plot points
I’ve been waiting for The Sea Beast (2022) to drop on Netflix forever.
How To Train Your Dragon (2010) has always been one of my favorite animated movies of all time. The Sea Beast (2022) was very appropriately poised to dethrone the perennial classic in my heart, but didn’t quite make it.
I won’t be going on a spiel like this NYT article which obsesses with one of the movie’s strange plot points, but I will be looking at a few things I really wished the moviemakers had really focused on.
But first…
What is The Sea Beast (2022) about?
The Sea Beast (2022) is a maritime adventure story that this Mashable article perfectly describes as Moby Dick meets How To Train Your Dragon.
A revenge-thirsty sea captain is on a quest to destroy the Red Bluster, a gigantic red sea monster that has cost him his eye. Unfortunately, a little girl (who dreams of being a monster hunter) stows away on his ship, and then they all go on an epic adventure which will see the little girl overturn a centuries-old lie they’ve all been told.
And of course, everything ends on a happily ever after note.
