The Return of the Slayer: How Buffy Has Stood the Test of Time
The impact of the return of a pop-cultural phenomenon and the three episodes you should re-watch before it begins
Every few years or so, there are some television shows that come along that completely define a generation. They cover the tough topics and the relevant emotions of their viewing demographic and have characters that become like family.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of these shows.
If you put aside the early campiness of the show and pluck out any of the less-popular episodes (I see you ‘Beer Bad’), you get a show that hits all of the marks. The strong female-led show incited every emotion to its loyal fans. It tackled tough topics like school shootings, the death of a parent, and the heartbreak of a first breakup, all while showcasing a Scooby Doo-esque monster of the week.
Looking back, 22 years after the final episode aired, I can’t help but argue that this show really has stood the test of time. In fact, I’d die on that hill.
