For a while there, Dylan O’Brien seemed like the next up-and-coming white boy in Hollywood. Making his acting debut on the hit series Teen Wolf (2011–17), where he played Tyler Posey’s sidekick for seven seasons, O’Brien made a strong impression with fans who appreciated him as an honest and funny foil to the show’s stoic lead. Unfortunately, staring in the teen rom-com The First Time in 2012 failed to launch O’Brien’s career to new heights, and he simmered on Teen Wolf for a few more seasons until The Maze Runner (2014) came along.

By 2015, the box office had already seen “strong female characters” from YA novel adaptations bring in some of the biggest numbers in years. Could a male star hit the same marks? The producers of The Maze Runner must have known teenage fans of the bestselling book series had probably watched Teen Wolf as well. That’s how O’Brien secured the role that would be his big break but would also secure his downfall.

On the set of the third Maze Runner movie, The Death Cure, O’Brien sustained a life-threatening injury, suffering facial fractures, lacerations, and a concussion after allegedly falling off a moving car. In interviews, Dylan has called the accident “scary” and “horrible,” but never has revealed the details. The accident pushed back the release date of the film by a year…
