It’s possible that in the past few years since its release, you’ve stumbled upon the 2018 remake of Suspiria, directed by Call Me by Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino.

The film follows Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), a ballet student who travels to Germany to attend a prestigious dance school only to find its teachers are ripe with a sinister ulterior motive. Guadagnino adds a full hour to the original film’s runtime, with several differences of note unfolding throughout.

The original film of the same name was directed by Italian filmmaker Dario Argento in 1977. Argento’s work is bursting with primary colors, graphic and often times surreal violence, and dubbed dialogue that creates a stylized atmosphere.

These elements are all staples within the Italian horror cinema of the 1970s and 1980s. Argento, whose filmography as a director includes at least fifteen feature films, has even been dubbed the “Master of Horror,” particularly working within the “Giallo” sub-genre.

Although Argento is perhaps the most widely popular director of Italian horror cinema from those decades, there were many other filmmakers creating equally strident and delightfully disgusting work.
