“It’s time for the Jedi to end…” Luke Skywalker: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Once the teaser poster for the upcoming eighth installment of the Star Wars saga had been released, the anticipation was thrust into a hysteria. The movie’s title created a widespread debate pertaining to its potential meaning and the public outcry for a trailer grew with intensity as the weeks passed. With the Super Bowl being a worldwide platform for the biggest movies to advertise their summer blockbusters, many of us expected to see the trailer taking pride of place amongst the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers: The Last Knight. But, as the event neared its climax there was STILL no Star Wars trailer!

With the fans resigned to an arduous wait, all eyes fell upon The Last Jedi Q&A panel at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando Florida. With guests that included Rian Johnson, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Kathleen Kennedy, the average fan could have been forgiven for spiraling into mayhem as we were treated to our first insights into the much-anticipated movie.

We were not disappointed.

After confirming that Luke Skywalker would play a significantly important role in The Last Jedi, Kathleen Kennedy revealed images of the Jedi Master wearing robes like those worn in 1983's Return of The Jedi. The Lucasfilm producer was reluctant to reveal any details regarding Rey’s lineage and when pressed, Daisy Ridley refused to let any details slip, with the exception that upon encountering Luke Skywalker for the very first time, Rey must manage the disappointment of him not being as she had envisioned.

But with the introduction of John Boyega, we were treated to a more in-depth look at the path Finn will be undertaking. Together, they revealed that in The Last Jedi Finn will not be “messing around” and his relationship with Poe Dameron will only deepen throughout the movie and build upon their repartee established during The Force Awakens.

In addition to these fantastic insights, we were introduced to a new character in Rose, a Resistance engineer who is destined to be thrust on the adventure of a lifetime. The character portrayed by actor Kelly Marie Tran will play an unlikely hero, but will be instrumental alongside Finn as the story unfolds. And then, it was confirmed that legendary droid BB-8 will be vital to proceedings in The Last Jedi.

If that wasn’t enough, we were treated to a brand-new and nostalgic teaser poster, reminiscent of the original release one-sheet of Return of the Jedi in 1983. The original poster depicted the duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker and revealed the shroud of the dark side looming above them. The Last Jedi poster however, focusses upon the struggle between the opposing forces of Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren with Rey holding aloft her lightsaber to symbolise that faint glimmer of light…
