SPOILERS AHEAD for all Arrowverse shows up to 12/7/17 (Mid-Season Finales)

With Martin Stein & Jefferson Jackson exiting Legends of Tomorrow, two seats open up onboard the Waverider and we’ve learned that at least one new character will be joining the team. Marc Guggenheim has been mum as to the character’s identity, but has confirmed that it will be a character from the Arrowverse that we already have met.

Let’s take a look at some of the most likely candidates.

But first, one character who has been ruled out:

RULED OUT

Russell Tovey as THE RAY

(0) The Ray / Ray Terrill (CRISIS ON EARTH X)

Due to the actor’s commitments on Quantico, The Ray has been ruled out as the addition to the Legends this season. He has his own battles to fight too, which can be seen on the animated Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

TOP CANDIDATES

Keiynan Lonsdale as KID FLASH

(1) Kid Flash / Wally West (THE FLASH)

Kid Flash is by far the most likely option. The Flash writers can’t seem to find a role for Wally on the show. He’s already reconciled with his family and his love interest Jesse Quick has dumped him. He’s even said as much on the show and has taken a leave of absence. Meanwhile, with the loss of Firestorm, the Legends have lost their most explosive superpower. Wally would be a great fit, as he has a power unique to the team, and would replace Jefferson as both the team’s younger character and only non-white male. However, its rumored that Lonsdale’s limited participation in The Flash is his own choice, due to other commitments. [Update — CONFIRMED!]

Matt Ryan as CONSTANTINE

(2) John Constantine (CONSTANTINE)

In a shocking twist in Legends of Tomorrow’s mid-season finale, Matt Ryan’s Constantine appeared on the ship with a message for White Canary. The internet seems to think that he’ll only stick around for a few episodes, but he’d be an extremely helpful ally in a fight against Mallus, Kuasa, Damien Darhk and Nora Darhk — all of whom have supernatural abilities. His wise-cracking personality would certainly breathe some life into the team, especially as Zari and Vixen are fairly flat. You can even see the potential in this Spring teaser. Ryan has expressed his love for the character and its certainly plausible he would accept a starring role on Legends, as CW’s live action Constantine is gone for good. [Update — CONFIRMED!]

Jes Macallan as AVA SHARPE

(3) Ava Sharpe (LEGENDS)

Agent Sharpe has replaced Rip Hunter as the Legends’ liaison to the Time Bureau, and despite being an antagonist for the majority of the season, she seems to have softened up a bit & even joined the Legends for a mission, before changing her mind halfway through. She has no abilities, but does have access to anachronism-fighting resources. There may or may not be some chemistry between her and White Canary as well. [Update — CONFIRMED!]

Wentworth Miller as CITIZEN COLD (Earth-X)

(4) Citizen Cold / Leo Snart [Earth X] (CRISIS ON EARTH X)

While Wentworth Miller has said he’s retiring the character, the wording of his statement may have been misinterpreted; He said he’s filming some of his final episodes and also mentioned Captain Cold, not Citizen Cold, the current iteration of his character. It looks like he and Heatwave, who have each lost their best friend, still have loose ends to tie up with their deceased partner’s doppelgänger. If he rejoins the team, it’s likely there will still be another addition too, as Miller won’t be returning in any fashion next season.

DARK HORSE OPTIONS

Tyler Hoechlin as SUPERMAN (EARTH 38)

(5) Superman / Kal-El [Earth 38](SUPERGIRL)

Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman appeared for a few episodes on Supergirl, but has largely been off-screen in Metropolis. Perhaps, at Kara’s recommendation, he could breach to Earth-1 & help our time-travelling heroes by providing a similar ability to Firestorm’s — flight and heat. However, his strength/invulnerability may be too similar to Citizen Steel’s powers.

Peyton List as GOLDEN GLIDER

(6) Golden Glider / Lisa Snart (THE FLASH)

With Leo Snart on his way out, maybe his sister Lisa would be willing to jump aboard with her old fellow gang member Mick Rory. While her powers are limited to a gun that turns things into gold, that could actually prove handy in gaining alliances with the gold-worshipping people of the past. But her most important quality is her charming and somewhat sadistic personality, which would certainly clash with the majority of the team — except Mick, of course. It helps that Peyton List’s other CW show, Frequency, was cancelled after one season. I’d bet the CW would love to keep her around.

John Wesley Shipp as THE FLASH (EARTH 3)

(7) The Flash / Jay Garrick [Earth 3] (THE FLASH)

Although a supporting character thus far, Jay Garrick could provide both speed and Stein-eqsue wisdom and advice to the team. The Arrowverse does love John Wesley Shipp (he’s played at least 4 different characters!). However, a goodie good guy with seemingly no character flaws, he isn’t a particularly exciting option.

Gabrielle Wright as ESRIN FORTUNA

(8) Esrin Fortuna (ARROW)

She’s only appeared once, but was instrumental in helping Oliver Queen in his quest to defeat Damien Darhk. An immortal shaman, she’d be extremely helpful in the Legends fight against the Darhks and Mallus, but as far as magic goes, Constantine is by far the more exciting choice. However, it is possible Constantine introduces her to the team during his arc (if that’s all it is).

Megalyn Echikunwoke as VIXEN (PRESENT DAY)

(9) Vixen / Mari McCabe (ARROW)

This season has explored the “Vixen” mythology in depth, and we’ve recently discovered that villain Kuasa is the sister of Mari McCabe and the granddaughter of Legends teammember Amaya Jiwe. It seems inevitable that we’ll see Mari at some point this season, but it certainly would be interesting if Amaya was put in the situation of working alongside her granddaughter. But do we need two Vixens — especially when Zari has an amulet too?

Joe Dinicol as RAGMAN

(10) Ragman / Rory Regan (ARROW)

We last saw Rory a year ago in the Arrow mid-season 5 finale, where he sacrificed his powers to stop a bomb. Recognizing his uselessness to the team, Rory resigned from the squad and went off to restore his bond with his rags. It’s now been a year — perhaps Regan has finally figured out how to activate his magic again. Another younger hero, Rory could fill the role left by Jefferson. But he could replace Jefferson in another important way: he is a mechanic, which was Jefferson’s specialty as well. Plus, there’s the inevitable joke that Rory’s first name is the same as Mick’s last. “Rory!” yells Sara. “What?” they both answer. Mick glares at Rory.

Johnathon Schaech as JONAH HEX (1874)

(11) Jonah Hex (LEGENDS)

Besides the Justice Society, Jonah Hex is the only “superhero” the Legends have crossed paths with in the past. He’s appeared once each season, so is clearly a favorite with the writers. However, he probably isn’t keen on leaving his hometown & his negative, gruff demeanor may be too similar to Mick Rory’s.

AVAILABLE, BUT UNLIKELY

Arthur Darvill as RIP HUNTER (2166)

(12) Rip Hunter (LEGENDS)

Despite vanishing at the end of Season 1, Rip seems to always find a way to appear on the show. He likely has a grudge against Sara & her team for turning him over to the Time Bureau, leading to his imprisonment, but his desire to destroy Mallus may prove even stronger. However, the less Rip Hunter appears in Legends, the better the show seems to be. Here’s hoping the writers realize this.

Falk Hentschel as HAWKMAN (2166) and Ciara Renée as HAWKGIRL

(13&14) Hawkgirl / Kendra Saunders & Hawkman / Scythian Torvil (LEGENDS)

This pair looked super cool, but their resurrection-centric storyline was pretty weird and very much tied to the now-dead Vandal Savage. The team would certainly be excited to have them back & the pair could replace the duo dynamic of Martin & Jefferson. However, the show has only improved since removing the Hawkpeople, and the writers would be wise to keep it that way.

Wil Traval as THE HUMAN TARGET

(15) The Human Target / Christopher Chance (ARROW)

A popular character with sadly only one overall Arrowverse appearance, Chance could be extremely helpful in Legends missions with his talent of taking the appearance of anybody. He’s mentioned in Season 6 of Arrow as being “out of the country”. But what if he’s really “out of time”? However, Chance seems to be more of a loner freelancer and less of a time-traveling superhero.

Violett Beane as JESSE QUICK

(16) Jesse Quick / Jesse Wells [Earth 2] (FLASH)

Like Kid Flash, Jesse has been essentially useless on The Flash for a while. Also, like Wally, she’d add both youth and speed to the team. She would also be the only member (besides Leo) from another Earth, and the show loves to add comedy by making references to other realities. However, unlike Wally, she was never a major character & she hasn’t appeared in the Arrowverse for quite some time.

Matt Ward as KOMODO

(17) Komodo / Simon Lacroix (ARROW)

The Arrowverse generally does a good job of bringing back older characters and giving them conclusions to their storylines. But one character who has not returned since Season 3 of Arrow is Komodo. He could be an interesting fit here, as he has a connection to Sara Lance and would certainly invite a general feeling of mistrust among the team.

Willa Holland as SPEEDY

(18) Speedy / Thea Queen (ARROW)

She’s not currently on a team and does not appear to have any interest in becoming Speedy again. And more importantly, she is currently recovering from a 6-month-long coma. However, as she doesn’t have a major role on Arrow right now, it would certainly give her something to do. Maybe a trip through time is just what she needs to fully recover.

Sharon Leal as MISS MARTIAN

(19) Miss Martian / M’gann M’orzz [Earth 38] (SUPERGIRL)

She’s busy fighting a war on Mars, but the time travellers could easily pick her up from a different time period or Earth. While her wide array of superpowers (which include shapeshifting, telepathy and flight) would certainly help the team, she has no connection to any team member. They probably do not even know she exists.

Dan Payne as OBSIDIAN (1942)

(20) Obsidian / Todd Rice (LEGENDS)

Obsidian is the only member of the Justice Society that hasn’t quit or been killed. He’s at least 80 in the present though, so the Legends would probably need to grab a version of him from the past. This could come at Amaya’s suggestion, as she was teammates with him back in the 40’s. His powers of creating darkness are cool, but he’s not a particularly interesting guy.

Who do you think is most likely to join the Legends? Anyone not on this list?
