How is Agriculture Embracing IoT Technology?

By CIOReview

The demand is growing explicitly with the increase in population. This demand can be met with the help of IoT.

Fremont, CA: The growing population is one of the biggest challenges. The global population is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, and this seems to be a big problem for the agriculture industry . Battling with other challenges, such as extreme weather conditions, farming’s environmental impact, and the rising weather conditions, the requirement for more food has to be met. In order to meet these increasing demands, agriculture has to embrace new technology. technology-based smart farming will enable growers and farmers to reduce waste and better the productivity form optimizing fertilizer use to increase the efficiency of farm vehicles’ routes.

A capital-intensive and hi-tech system, Smart farming, that allows in growing food cleanly and sustainably for the people. In an IoT based smart farming, the system is built for monitoring the crop field with the help of sensors and automated irrigation systems. It is highly advanced compared to the conventional approach. In terms of environmental issues, IoT based smart farming can provide huge benefits, including efficient water usage, or optimization of inputs and treatments.

IoT in Farming

Precision Farming- It can be known as the method that makes farming practice more controlled and accurate concerning raising livestock and growing crops. In this approach of farm management, the vital thing is to use IT and various other items like sensors, robotics, control systems, automated hardware, autonomous vehicles, variable technology, and many more. Incorporation of access to high-speed internet, mobile devices, and reliable, low-cost satellites by the manufacturers are some of the technologies characterizing the precision agriculture trend.

Drones- Technology has been evolving with every passing day, and drones are one such example. Currently, agriculture is one of the major industries to incorporate drones. Drones are primarily used to better various agricultural practices. In practices such as crop health assessment, crop monitoring, irrigation, crop spraying, planting, and soil and field analysis, ground-based and aerial-based drones are being used in the agricultural industry. The benefits of drones include crop health imaging, ease of use, integrated GIS mapping , saves time, and the potential to increase the flow.

Livestock Monitoring- Huge farm owners can use wireless IoT applications to gather data regarding the location, well-being, and the health of their cattle. This helps them to assess the animals that are sick and separate them from the herd, preventing the spread of diseases. Incorporation of IoT also saves the labor costs, as ranchers can locate their cattle with the help of IoT sensors.
