The path to election day has been an expensive journey for candidates. We’ve taken the time to dive into the numbers to help spell out exactly how much money is being thrown around in the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s presidential primary in New York.

Big Picture: More than $30 million was spent by candidates and super PACs in an effort to win 💸

In fact, over the past three months, candidates have spent more than one third of that overall figure in the Big Apple. Hillary Clinton leads the pack with $6.1 million spent followed closely by Bernie Sanders whose campaign spent nearly $5.8 million. On the Republican side, Donald Trump spent $1.4 million compared to $37k spent by Ted Cruz and $22k spent by John Kasich.

The dollar figure spent by Clinton and Trump directly on efforts to win the New York primary may actually be lower than data indicates since these totals include any vendors or staff located within the state. Both candidates house their national campaign headquarters in New York so any money spent on their national office and staff is also reflected in these figures.

On the other hand let’s take a look at how the Brooklyn born senator from Vermont has been spending in his home state versus Vermont where the Sanders campaign is headquartered.

Unlike other states where independent expenditures by super PACs in support and opposition to the candidates has totaled in the millions, such spending has been relatively small — just $288k — in New York in the three months leading up to the state’s presidential primary.

We’re building tools that give everyone the power to follow the money. Want to see what happens next?

We always love talking about what we’re working on. If you have any questions about our data, our company, or just want to say hi, please send emails to jon@circavictor.com or press@circavictor.com.
