Logo design and unseeing things

In 2011, when Circa was founded one of the first branding exercises was coming up with a logo. While I wasn’t a full-time designer anymore it was always still a fun challenge to come up with logos. For our brand, we wanted something that could stand the test of time because after all, we named our company after a word that carried with it a connotation of time. No flashy colors, no extraneous marks, just a clean wordmark.

I fired up Illustrator and picked out a typeface that I was falling in love with called Livory. It really only took a few tweaks to get the wordmark to look just the way that seemed solid…thus the first Circa logo was born and it’s the one that we’ve used since then.

Years pass and we’ve been continually happy with it…then came the tweet.

…and we couldn’t unsee it.

We never saw it as a problem before, ever. Somehow it looked like the height of the letters seemed to decrease from left to right. When you arrived at the “a” it looked really out of place.

As we started getting ready to launch our full-blown web experience we figured it might be a great time to get something new put together. We still loved the logo that we already had so it didn’t feel like a big change was necessary. So with a few changes to the i, r, and the infamous “a” our kickass designer Christine came up with our revised logo that we can now love even more. Without further adieu…

Such a big difference right? You’re probably thinking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ …we knew you’d think that. No, we didn’t do some crazy Pepsi-level wacky analysis of concentric circles, golden ratios, or gravitational pulls. It was just a series of tweaks that we like, and think make the logo look cleaner, sleeker. While the changes may appear subtle, here’s a little comparison showing the differences (the pink one is the new revision, teal is old):

And that’s it! We’ll start rolling out our revised logo over time, starting with the launch of circanews.com next week!
