These aren’t quite the blocks we’re referring to.

At Circle Lab, we want to make sure we’re working on problems worth solving.

When we launched the Circular Events Challenge, we started out with the simple observation that there is a tremendous opportunity for events and conferences to use the circular economy as a framework to revamp their ways of operating and to drive and inspire positive change.

While we’re working tirelessly to provide you with an update on the implementation phase, we’re now also exploring different venues to guide and frame our next challenge.

Because we know very well the importance of incorporating digital technologies in tracking and optimising resource use, strengthening connections between supply chain actors, and enabling the implementation of circular models, we recently started wondering: what about blockchain?

What seemed like a fairly straightforward thought at the time sparked a storm of questions amongst our team:

  • What problems is blockchain really trying to solve?
  • What are the current limitations of the technology?
  • Does blockchain have a role in supporting and enabling circular supply chains at all? How so?

The list goes on.

Before digging any deeper, we decided to take a moment to bring you along on our exploratory journey and decide, together, if and how we could best approach these questions and put blockchain to the service of a circular economy.

To do so, we’re co-hosting a series of Twitter chats with Circle Economy on June 12, 13, and 14. Using the hashtag #CircleChat, we’re hoping to pool insights from all of you and explore, together, whether and how we can use our conversation to fuel another challenge on Circle Lab.

On the programme:

June 12, 6–7PM CEST: Making sense of blockchain

During the first Twitter chat of this series, we’ll explore the problems blockchain is trying to solve, the problems it’s not suited for, common misconceptions about blockchain, creative applications of the technology that already exist, and other key aspects of the technology.

June 13, 6–7PM CEST: Circular supply chains: barriers & opportunities

During the second chat of this series, we’ll go over key barriers preventing circularity and collaboration within value chains, and explore whether and how monopolisation of data can be problematic in building trust and transparency, among other issues.

June 14, 6–7PM CEST: Bringing it all together: blockchain & the circular economy

During the third and last Twitter chat of this series, we’ll try and bring both concepts together and explore whether and how blockchain can address key barriers to circularity within supply chains.

Are you a blockchain expert or enthusiast, a circular innovator, a supply chain professional, a curious onlooker, or all of the above?

Join us on this exploratory journey and let us know your thoughts on the very problems blockchain is trying to solve, the barriers hindering circularity today, and where we can find common ground to connect and bridge the two.

Note that while we’re excited to learn more about creative applications of emerging technologies and get a sense of where you see the opportunities to use them to serve the circular economy, at the moment, we are still searching for suitable partners to make this challenge a reality on Circle Lab.
