Knowing Your Why
By: Delbert Ty
Joining a startup was never originally a dream of mine. Back when I was younger, my dream was to make ads that people would remember. This prompted me to get internships and freelance gigs within the advertising industry. For a time, it was fun, but that led me to discover a different area that I wanted to focus on — marketing. From there, I worked hard to get into the biggest marketing companies in the world. Luckily, I found myself in P&G working on some of the biggest brands they had.
What drove me more at P&G was being part of something that made life a little better for a whole swath of people. Whether it was their shirts being just a little bit whiter, or their hair being that much softer.
After working for close to a decade at P&G and with the rise of all the world changing unicorns happening all over the world, I realized that I could be a part of something bigger. Something that changed lives even more. That’s when I decided that I needed to be in a startup. That’s how I ended up in Circles.Life.
How I exactly joined Circles.Life is a different story altogether, but this is more about WHY I wanted and continue to want to be a part of Circles.Life’s ongoing journey.
Coming from a big blue-chip company like P&G and joining a then-fledgeling company like Circles.Life is a big step. Below is a condensed version of how things unfolded for me to some degree.
Initial reaction of moving to a Startup:
A few months into the Startup with not a lot of visible traction:
A few more months in with some external success:
What drove me through all this was being clear with my WHY. As delusional as it sounds, I believe Circles.Life has a decent shot to change the world and I can be a part of that. Imagine being part of the original team at Google who launched their search product or Gmail. Better yet, imagine being part of the original team at DARPA who first wrote the lines of code that would eventually be the Internet.
At Circles.Life we are on a mission to revolutionize the entire ecosystem around personalized digital services. Telco, which is a subset of this ecosystem, is just one step there and just that alone is revolutionary. We’re able to grow and scale as much as a traditional billion dollar telco with literally less than a tenth of the cost. To put that in another way, how world-changing would it be if we could build houses for everyone with 1/10th the resources?

Will Circles.Life be all that? I honestly don’t know. But I do think we have a solid shot at it. This is what drives me during the days when growth is behind targets. This is what drives me during the days when we have to make hard choices. This is what drives me when it feels like the world is against you.
Being in a company like Circles.Life is definitely not for everyone, just like climbing mountains or camping isn’t for everyone. I make it a point to be as blunt as possible to people I interview. You won’t get the best pay here. The hours are long and often includes weekends. Finally, the targets are crazy-high and at times (most times) you will feel it to be impossible. This gig is just not for most people.
But for a select few, Circles.Life sounds like home.
If you want the highest growth curve possible, then Circles.Life is the place for you!
