So you ‘HELP HIM’ in ‘HIS’ venture?

My husband and I have been working together since the last 15 years. We have built our lives and careers together, and have the mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work, just like numerous other working colleagues or professionals would have. We understand and complement each other’s skill sets and have always worked together as a team — whether at work, at home, while raising our child or sharing family responsibilities.

That’s great, right? Of course, it is! But then, I get asked this question time and again — if I ‘help him’, as if my role is subservient to his in our business — which actually undermines the years of hard work we put into together into making something meaningful in our lives; and we start to wonder…

Is it that difficult for people to believe that women in india can have an equal and important contribution to that of a man in a professional environment?

Are these preconceptions of different value outputs by different genders never going to change?

Will women need to keep fighting for their identities and have to make double the effort to get noticed… leave alone… recognition of their hard work?

I don’t really blame those who ask these questions, but what is worth considering is that — in spite of all the strides women have made and continue to make, in spite of the shrinking gender gap in technology, in spite of women playing an equally critical professional role in economic successes, do we as a society harbour the same old mindsets and definitions of assumed gender roles of the ‘60s? It might seem like a small thing to be offended by, (which you might have figured by now…that I am, considering the missing sense of humour in this post), but has a huge underlying truth which we, as Indians, need to acknowledge and act upon.

Have you come across such questions or asked someone these questions yourself? If yes, we still have a long way to go.
