Our ongoing series, Humans of Meraki, highlights employee perspectives and articulates who we are and the magic of working at Meraki. We hope this series will provide insight into what motivates Merakians at work and beyond. Welcome — we’re happy you’re here.

In celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride, recognized in June, we interviewed Amber Rominger, Learning Technologist on the Global Onboarding & Learning Design team at Meraki. Amber shares how the inclusive culture at Meraki empowered her to live authentically.

What initially attracted you to Cisco Meraki?

I was attracted to Meraki based on its reputation for fostering a nurturing and inclusive work environment. When I interviewed for my position, I experienced inclusivity firsthand. The office was adorned with LGBTQ+ flags, which conveyed to me, a queer woman, that I was welcome at Meraki and could show up authentically. Additionally, when I inquired about what employees value most about the company, the unanimous response was “the people.” When I started at Meraki, I quickly learned that the culture emphasizes work-life balance, and although Merakians are passionate about their work, they also know how to enjoy life.

Now that you’ve worked at Meraki for several years, how has our culture of inclusivity continued to support you?
Throughout my five years at Meraki, inclusivity has been a lived reality for me. From our Pride Month festivities to our inclusive communities, Meraki actively celebrates and embraces the LGBTQ+ community and all employees. At Meraki, I feel both accepted and celebrated for who I am. My opinions and contributions are valued by my teammates and leaders. Given the vibrant culture at Meraki, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to make a lasting impact and evolve alongside the company.

It’s significant to be able to show up authentically at work. In former work environments, I’ve felt compelled to hide aspects of my identity, which was draining and ultimately drove me to look for new employment. In a world where LGBTQ+ individuals often feel marginalized, it’s refreshing to be a part of a company that recognizes how diversity enriches our community. This ethos contributes to my longevity and commitment to Meraki.

What does Pride Month mean to you? How are you celebrating?

For me, Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate chosen families — the individuals who embrace and uplift us when our families of origin may not. Working at Meraki and living in the vibrant community of San Francisco, I’ve experienced the profound power of inclusivity. Celebrations like Pride inspire individuals to be themselves and live open, joyful lives. Pride serves as a reminder of the beauty found in diversity and the crucial role inclusivity plays in shaping a more compassionate and understanding society.

What makes you most proud of your identity?
Growing up in a deeply conservative and religious environment, I faced immense challenges and internalized shame regarding my identity. However, through years of introspection, self-acceptance, and courage, I’ve emerged as someone who stands unapologetically proud of who I am. In doing so, I had to overcome walls of prejudice and self-doubt that once confined me. I’m proud of my resilience and the love I’ve cultivated for myself and others. My pride isn’t just about celebrating who I am; it’s about paving the way for those struggling to love and accept themselves.

If a candidate were considering joining Meraki, what would you tell them?

Meraki fosters inclusivity, innovation, simplicity, and collaboration. Employees are encouraged to be bold, embrace new opportunities, and learn from mistakes. The Meraki culture exemplifies the value of “everybody in,” where support, kindness, and intellect converge. My experience at Meraki has been more than a career for me; it’s made a meaningful impact on my personal life. The Meraki community has given me a sense of belonging and recognition in the workplace, which has boosted my confidence in the world. Meraki is committed to ensuring all employees feel accepted, making being part of the organization a genuine honor.

How would you define “Meraki Magic”?

To me, Meraki Magic is created by the people who work here and our special culture that makes employees feel seen, valued, and appreciated.
