Kevin Garnett is one of the most iconic players of the 2000’s, a guaranteed Hall of Famer and arguably a top 5 Power Forward of all time. Throughout KG’s career he has wore three different numbers, 21, 5 and 2; each number has a secret meaning behind it. In this article I’m going to talk about the hidden meaning behind Garnett wearing #2.

As most people know, Garnett spent the beginning (and majority) of his career playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, while playing for them he played alongside a player by the name of Malik Sealy; Malik Sealy played with Garnett from 1998 to 2000. Unfortunately after their second season together ended, Sealy died in a head on car crash. It clearly was a big loss to all around them as Flip Saunders (the coach at the time) said “We will long remember Malik, not only for his outstanding ability on the basketball court but also for his gentleness and strength of character in our classrooms and throughout our classrooms”. Kevin Garnett grew up idolizing Malik Sealy, and in Minnesota wore #21 to be like Sealy, and when Sealy came to join Minnesota in 1998 to play alongside KG. On May 20th, 2000 Malik Sealy and a group of other people who were close to Garnett, threw him a surprise birthday party. On his way home from the party, Malik Sealy died in a head on car crash, which destroyed KG. 13 years later, KG was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, and in honor of Malik and his time in Minnesota, KG decided to don the #2. Kevin Garnett cried on camera one time in an interview, just thinking of Sealy, making it even more obvious how much he truthfully loved Sealy.

Thank You.
