Community Demands Justice After Black Man Killed By Off Duty Police Officer

A community is outraged and a family is in mourning after a Dallas off-duty police officer entered a black man’s home and killed him on Thursday night.

The unnamed female office claims she entered the home of the man, 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, thinking it was her own apartment, according to the story she has given authorities.

Authorities in the Dallas Police Department told the media that Jean “confronted” the officer, who was in uniform, causing her to pull out her service weapon and fire at Jean, striking him and leading to his death.

The officer called dispatch immediately to report the shooting and when police arrived she explained that she thought Jean’s apartment was hers.

The incident occurred before 10 p.m. at South Side Flats, a high-end apartment complex in downtown Dallas.

“We still have a lot to do in this investigation,” Sergeant Warren Mitchell said at a news conference early Friday.

“There’s a lot of information I understand you guys want but this is all we can give you at this time,” he said.

But by Friday evening the Dallas police said it was seeking a warrant to arrest the officer on manslaughter charges.

Police Chief Renee Hall said, at an afternoon press conference, that a blood sample was taken from the officer to find out what her drug and alcohol levels were at the time of the shooting.

Hall confirmed that the officer was whit but said that she did not believe that race was a factor in the shooting. She said that the officer would be identified after charges were filed.

Authorities have not explained how the officer gained access to Jean’s home or if Jean’s door was unlocked or open.

“Right now there are more questions than there are answers,” Hall told reporters.

Jean, who was born and raised on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, moved to the United States and attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas where he often headed worship services on campus before he graduated in 2016.
