Did you know about the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

If you are getting the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit or are on a low income you should be able to get £140 off your energy bill for the 2018/19 winter.

Applications are made directly to your energy provider but the money is not paid to you — it’s a one-off discount on your electricity bill between September and March. You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity.

It is important to know that this discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

Pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters

You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter.

Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.

Park (mobile) homes

The Park Homes scheme is currently closed to new applications for winter 2018 to 2019.

Fill in the Park Homes Warm Home Discount application form to be contacted if the scheme reopens.

How to apply

If you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit you'll receive a letter by the 7th December telling you how to get the discount if you qualify.

The letter will confirm if you need to contact the helpline, but make sure you do this before 28th February. Your energy supplier should then apply the discount to your bill by the end of March 2019.

If you haven’t got the letter, and you think you should have, the contact the Warm Home Discount Team on 0800 7310214.

If you are on a low income, you maybe able to apply directly to your energy provider but:

  • your energy supplier must be part of the scheme
  • you need to be on a low income; and
  • you must get one of the qualifying means-tested benefits

In these circumstances, its your energy supplier who decides who gets the discount but it is important you check with your supplier as early as possible as the number of discounts suppliers can give are limited.

Check to see if you supplier is part o the scheme via the GOV.uk website.

What other support is available?

If you’re struggling to afford your energy bills, you might be able to take advantage of other benefits, grants and help offered by the government and energy suppliers including:

  • the Winter Fuel Payment,
  • Cold Weather Payments; and
  • Grants to help pay off your energy debts
