Efosa Ojomo in analysing the pathway to success of some of the larger businesses in Nigeria, captures perfectly one of the key differences in perspective that has made their massive success in such a challenging market possible – recognising the gaps are actually opportunities.

The biggest businesses today everywhere essentially took that view. If we don’t have it, of it doesn’t exist already – let’s build it.

There are aspects of civilisation that we now see as basic – rail, aviation, telecommunications, the police, fire services, hospitals and education – which were all essentially built out of nothing by private sector innovators and then much, much later adopted by governments.

That’s still the pattern today everywhere. SpaceX – which you could argue is probably one of the most innovative businesses currently in existence – isn’t waiting for an established interplanetary infrastructure, it’s out there building it.

These gaps are actually easy to spot – just listen to your own complaints.
