In the early Working Internet days say 1996–97 people had to use DUN or Dial Up Networking. Unix(later linux) had built in networking but Win 3.11 for workgroups was the first Networked OS in the DOS-Win MS Family.

MyCorkboard

A screen saver! Pick from hundreds of drag-and-drop items to create your own personal design. It was a virtual desktop in screensaver mode.

Add clocks, photos, calendars, sticky notes, to do lists, name plates, phone dialers, animated pets and dozens of amazing gizmos.

This had Mini Apps. Maybe the first free App Store, Something like Desktop Widgets that came much later. iGoogle also had similar interesting toys.

The creator of corkboard has foreseen widgets, appstore and the Handheld computer UI even before Internet was available.
