Kaprun: Top 5 things you can’t miss

Kaprun, also known as “Zell am See-Kaprun” is an important tourist destination well known for the glacier Kitzsteinhorn. It used to be a mining village in the past, and today it has a population of 3,000. Since Kaprun is near to the glacier skiing area, the ski season starts here earlier and you can have your winter holiday here starting from November.

Kaprun is really easy accessible thanks to the neighboring Zell am See via bus, train and car. You can arrive at the Zell am See train station and take a bus or a taxi to get to your accommodation. 1. Sigmund-Thun-Klamm walk

It’s not so hard to walk through wooden stairs and the water under them, and you can get back walking in the forest. There is a perfect opportunity to take photos along the canyon filled with small waterfalls.

Through the top gate you can go to the Kapruner Ache Lake which can be walked around and then you can walk to the power station through the trees. There is also a hiking track which takes you to the Dam and the Lake around it.

The walk through the gorge takes about 20 minutes, ending with a lovely lake at the top — Klammsee. This beautiful and relaxing area, with animals and plants and educational stations and playground for the kids, will give you incredible experience and make this well worth a visit. Complete your journey in the café on the top with a cup of hot tea in winter or delicious ice cream in the summer. Don’t forget to buy some souvenirs before you take the walk back down the waterfalls!

Are you not tired from the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm walk? Try the 3-hour hike to the Heinrich Schwaiger Hut high and enjoy the water reservoirs above Kaprun! The unique lakes colored in turquoise, the glaciers, the vivid slopes, and falls will make this journey unforgettable. Suitable for families because the road is easy to walk and there is a beautiful playground on the top, with a winding slide and an open water cooling system for the children to play and learn.

There are restaurants, museum, guided tours inside the dams and much more! The view from the mountaintop in the middle of the two dams — Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden, is incredible.
You will find yourself in the views, walking around the dams for hours! Make sure you take your camera because you can take awesome photos up there.

Take the herbal walk down from Mooserboden reservoir to the Furthermoar Alm and you are not going to regret. This is one of the best walks in the area. You will find distinctive vegetation, stone mountains and lots of birds. On the way down (about 45-minute walk), you can make a stop and taste some of the best homemade meals that come from own production following traditional recipes.

The best thing to do after the hiking or the hard weeks skiing is to relax the sore muscles in a total luxury spa experience. You can relax in outdoor saline pools, whilst enjoying cocktails with a marvelous view of the slopes or go to the sauna area. You will find five indoor pools and three outdoor ones. Pools and activities for the little ones are not excluded. If you get “tired” relaxing, there is also a lovely restaurant with a very tasty food served.

Great place to visit at the end of the day is also the Alpine Coaster Maisiflitzer — a very long rollercoaster up the mountain with a fun park for kids.

When you are in Kaprun and the old cars are your thing, the visit of one of the best oldtimer collections in the world is not be missed!
Although the place is small — located in a hotel’s basement, you will find a fascinating collection of cars, mopeds and bikes. The place is amazing even for the ones that are not into cars.
