Meet City Bureau’s Spring 2018 journalists! For the next 10 weeks, our reporting fellows will be in your communities, seeking your input.

We’re also excited to inform you that this spring, with the support of our Press Club members and foundation partners, we were able to increase the size of our fellowship by 30 percent — that’s three extra reporters — to do even more top-notch, community-focused journalism that addresses the news and information needs of people living on Chicago’s South and West Sides.

Without further ado…our Spring 2018 cohort:

EDUCATION TEAM: This team is tackling the upcoming Local School Council elections. They’ll look into schools with hyper-contentious elections and others without many candidates at all—and what it means for the students enrolled there.

Team Leader: Hannah Hayes. Reporters: Emmanuel Camarillo, F. Amanda Tugade

POLICE IN SCHOOLS TEAM: We’re teaming up again with WBEZ’s Curious City to answer a question: “Why doesn’t Chicago police have a specific unit that specializes in being in Chicago public schools?” Coming off our 2017 investigation into the issue, we’re sure there’s a lot to explore here.

Team Leader: Jeremy Borden. Reporters: Olivia Cunningham, Alex Y. Ding

CRIMINAL JUSTICE TEAM: What does it take to appeal a conviction from prison? We’re looking into the complicated process and hurdles for incarcerated people who are trying to prove their innocence.

Team Leader: Manny Ramos. Reporters: Bashirah Mack, Ellen Mayer

HOUSING TEAM: Are rents overinflated in Englewood? We’re looking into a tip from a concerned citizen to sort out fact from fiction in the conversation about housing prices, fair market rent, Section 8 and gentrification in the South Side neighborhood.

Team Leader: Alex Hernandez. Reporters: Pascal Fernandes, Christian Belanger

PHOTOGRAPHY FELLOW: We’re excited to welcome Pat Nabong as our resident photojournalist, who will be assisting all teams with their visual work, in addition to producing her own project about aging on Chicago’s South Side.
