I have watched — and continue to watch — people close and adjacent to me, who have debilitating anxiety. And, almost to a person, they normalize their conditions.

This is their way of taking control.

Chalking up resistance to new things or refusing to do anything outside of a super rigid and structured routine of self-imposed limited options as a perfectly sane and logical choice, rather than what it is. A coping mechanism to artificially remove layers of anxiety as to not have to deal with them.

As my wife and I prepare to move to Spain in just four-and-a-half months now (!), I know that my anxiety could come to the surface.

Actually, it’s always there. Just below and sometimes at the surface. I think it’s an underlying reality for many of us. The key is to appropriately squash it when it bubbles up.
