There Are No More Naked People In San Francisco

And this is really an illustration of a much larger problem with America’s big, once-weird cities

Last week, during my lesson, I told my Spanish instructor that I was going to spend eight days in San Francisco.

His response —

Cuando estuve allí, vi gente desnuda por todas partes. Incluso en cafeterías.

Which translates to —

When I was there, I saw naked people everywhere. Even in cafeterias.

He visited San Francisco about 10 years ago. I lived there shortly before, between 1999 and 2006. Since 2006, I have been back dozens of times. And my instructor is right. He probably saw a lot of naked people back in the day.

When I lived in San Francisco, it was not uncommon to walk down the street and, at the very least, see a guy walking around in Chaps with his ass (or more) hanging out. Almost as frequently, you’d see somebody walking another human — usually dressed in full leather or latex — on a leash.

Or some variation of the above alongside all types of every level of eccentricity. You couldn’t leave your apartment without seeing — and I say this in the absolute best sense of the word — weirdos walking around.
