2015 Western Conference Preseason Rankings
The Western Conference looks again to be stacked. It’s a good thing Orlando City is in the East, as the West would provide a tougher debut year for the Lions. LA and Seattle are the obvious favorites, but who else could challenge in the crowded West?
Los Angeles Galaxy- Vegas MLS Cup odds 3/1
The perennial favorite is once again at the top of the power rankings, where they deserve to be. The loss of Landon Donovan is huge, so it will be interesting to see how they replace him. Steven Gerrard arrives in July and it will take some time for the 2015 version of Galaxy to take shape. With young stars such as Gyasi Zardez and proven winners like MVP Robbie Keane and coach Bruce Arena, expect the Galaxy to reload and challenge for a title once again.
Seattle Sounders- 9/2
Sounders also lost a big US star in DeAndre Yedlin, as he takes his talents to North London. This won’t be as big of a loss as Landon Donovan. The formidable strike force of Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins returns and looks set to continue their goal scoring ways, as they try for a second consecutive Supporters Shield.
Sporting Kansas City- 20/1
The 2013 MLS Cup Winners took a step back last year, but I’d look for a resurgence this year with a solid core containing Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and former Lion, Dom Dwyer.
FC Dallas- 20/1
This young and upcoming squad could surprise many this year and challenge straight away. If they can stop leaking goals at the back and get even more out of their 2014 rookie of the year Tesho Akindele, then the Hoops could be a dark horse candidate this season.
Real Salt Lake- 12/1
RSL is a very well run club that doesn’t need the big names to compete. Kyle Beckerman is rock solid in midfield and this team will be a thorn in everyone’s side. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them climb these rankings in short time.
Battle for the Sixth Spot
Portland Timbers- 25/1
I expect Portland to make a major jump this year. They will be happy with just making the playoffs but there is no reason to think they cant shoot for more with their talented crop of players. Expect the Timbers to turn the corner and start their rise as a Western Conference Power.
Vancouver Whitecaps- 30/1
With the addition of the CONCACAF Champions League to their schedule we will see how they cope this year. A lack of goal scoring could hinder their chances at returning to the playoffs.
Maybe Next Year
Houston Dynamo- 40/1
Colorado Rapids- 50/1
San Jose Earthquakes- 50/1
