Interviewing our Top 3 seeded players after Round #1 of the Torneamentum de Magnus.
As we finish the qualifying round of our PVP beta tournament, it’s clear that some players have made a name for themselves. We decided to do a short interview with our three top seeded players before they go into the second round to see how they were feeling and asked them a few questions about their experiences so far.
First Seed: Corel
Corel, you have absolutely dominated consistently since the beta started and have been a force to be reckoned with, what’s your secret?
I’ve been experimenting with dozens of hero and troop combos to find strategies and tactics that work. I also have over a hundred matches against players and probably over 200 matches against the AI in order to constantly learn the mechanics and improve my game.
You have consistently played with a 2H squad which is pretty anti meta right now, what was your reasoning behind picking them over something else and do you think they have helped you do so well?
2Handers hit harder than any other unit. I occasionally use them to position for devastating blows against vulnerable targets. I’m not so sure how well they have helped, as I’m still experimenting to find ways to use them, but I think utilizing other units instead of 2 handers may have helped me more.
How confident are you in winning the tournament, is there anyone you’re worried about facing?
Not entirely confident haha. There are several players that are extremely good and it’s any one’s match. Yes, Dr_Tacopus is one I do worry about facing.
Second Seed: Drtacopus
You ended up doing really well in the first stage, did you think you would place as high as you did when you started — did you have some experience from other strategy based games?
I didn’t think I would place as high as I have. I did think I would likely make it in the tournament though. I’ve been playing strategy games my whole life. Board games like Chess, Risk, and Catan. As well as too many video games to mention. So I have lots of experience with strategy games in general. With the number of players expected to take part in this tournament, I felt fairly confident I would be able to fight my way to a spot in round 2.
What’s you favourite squad and why?
Though I use them the least, I still have a soft spot for the melee class. They’re underestimated most times and their use as a meat shield is very helpful if they’re positioned right.
Are there any players you’re cautious of facing in round 2 and if so do you have a plan to beat them?
I plan to be cautious with every single player in the second round. I’ve gone up against most of them at least once and most of them have beaten me at least once, so I know I’m not invincible. As far as how to beat my opponents, without going into to much detail, I plan to not rush my decisions and not make a decision without thinking it through. One misstep is all it takes to turn the tide of these battles, and I’ve had my share of missteps. That’s what I hope to avoid in the tournament.
Third Seed: Armoredox (Spankhammer)
The battle for the third seed slot was pretty close, how do you feel now that you managed to secure it?
Like I finally grasp some fundamentals haha! A lot of good opponents, honoured to be among such company.
When you started tackling the ladder it wasn’t going too well, however in the last day you suddenly started stomping many battles, what was it that changed?
Big part that made a few victories immediately attainable was AP monitoring, their troops mainly, they can’t move such and such AND attack…
As above, a couple of concepts that I hadn’t managed to fully work with clicked. My aggressive style needed refinement/adjustment, a huge gamechanger was monitoring the enemy AP, along with appropriate use of heroes.
Do you have any words for the other two seeds (Drtacopus and Coerl) before the second round starts?
Been interesting, fun, brutally educational too. Both very formidable opponents, look forward to sharing a tankard in the alehouse ;) :beeer:
It seems like we have quite a cautious and humble bunch up at the top of the ladder, each one seems to recognise that a misplay can turn the tide of war and we can’t wait to see how they do in the second round. There are also twn other bloodthirsty combatants who will be aiming to take them down and winning the tournament, who knows what might happen?
We want to thank everyone for being such a great sport along the way so far. Competition naturally brings out the competitive nature in us all, however, we have noticed that our players have been both humble in victory and respectful in defeat and to be frank, this is a very refreshing attitude for PVP and one that we hope will continue as we grow!
