Lore and Story in CityStates: Medieval

Today we want to address an area of CityStates that hasn’t seen much of the light of day in terms of serious discussion (Freya wielding Magnus’ leg bones anyone?).

Lore in video games, particularly in a game like CS:M is generally viewed by three camps of people. There are those of you who will want to find out every bit of information available about a hero and there are of course, those of you who will inevitably skip it completely. As for the third group, these are people who enjoy having an idea of what’s going on but dislike being bombarded by explanations while they’re trying to actually play the game.

Taking the aforementioned into account we wanted to devise a delivery method that worked for everyone. To achieve this, we have decided to deliver the story and lore in bite sized chunks that individually may tell part of the tale, from a single perspective but ultimately combine to create a tapestry of world events. We are currently working on delivering these through two methods.

Documents

These may be recovered pages of old scholar records, letters written between those involved in past events or even verses sung in the taverns by traveling bards.

As you play CS:M, you will come across these documents and they will be added to your collections in which you will be able to read them at a time that suits you.

Flavour Text

Certain in game items, such as hero NFTs come with flavour text. This is another area where we can add pieces to the story via quotes or other small bits of information that will help connect the dots in terms of lore.

We’re looking forward to seeing the players piece the story together and maybe even taking sides. If you have any questions or suggestions, as always we’re happy to answer and hear your feedback on Discord.
