An insight from Netherland

Flo by Springlab

The Vision Zero project is launching globally. In the US, New York City, Washington DC, seattle, Denver and other major cities start their pilot program. To eliminate the collision between vehicles and cyclist, most of the city enter a threshold where they rash into an infrastructure puzzle. Endless Building traffic light or stop sign for cars in intersections as well as adding a sensor that detects the vehicle’s speed. Government and tech companies have provided enough insights and practical solution aiming to accomplish Vision Zero. What about some infrastructures other than bike lane for the cyclists? Some restrictions for cyclists to prevent a collision?

Take a break and visit Netherland. A country holds 17 million residents with 23 million bicycles are now implementing a smart traffic light for cyclist. (CNN)

A rabbit means to run, a turtle means slow, a cow means stay the same, a thumb up tells you are doing a great job. Flo, the newest bike traffic light, deliveries massage to the rider in Utrecht, Netherlands. Equipped with speed sensor, Flo would able to detect cyclists’ speeds. Hence,it will tell cyclist ahead of time whether they need to speed up, maintain the pace, or slow down to make the next light.

Flo is designed by Dutch Company Springlab and with a primary purpose to address cyclists’ frustrations at constant wait times at traffic lights. However, my takeaway from this product is it can also prevent cyclist collision with vehicles. The smart traffic light can also be used as a division tool similar to let bike follow pedestrian signals. In this way, the rabbit will tell them to cross; turtle tells them to slow down and cow to stop.
