Recently, Amazon and Space X have both been pioneering the use of satellites to provide internet access to remote areas where swaths of the population access are disconnected. The impact of the internet is immeasurable; the promise of internet brings education, job opportunities, and an endless amount of resources to help communities access resources and connect ideas across oceans. As of now, over 3 billion people do not have access to internet. There are, however, concern regarding this program. Large populations of people are not in “remote” areas. For instance, approximately 26% of New Yorkers do not have broadband internet access at home, as of 2014. New York City is the opposite of what one would consider “remote” yet many customers can’t afford internet access because of lack of competition amongst internet providers. The issue with this trend in space satellites for internet access is that it does little to remedy the systemic reasons why there is little internet access for many people who live in populous urban areas. To do this, there must be extensive overhaul in the current geographical distribution of internet providers, as well as more government funding for municipal companies, which generally have a track record of providing faster and more reliable service to their citizens.
