Context: Using tools to monitor network traffic, researchers found 24 popular iPhone apps that were collecting location data — like Bluetooth beacons to Wi-Fi network names — to know where a person is and where they visit. These data monetization firms also collect other device data from the accelerometer, battery charge status and cell network names. My opinion: Sometimes it is understandable for developers to collect location data, either for the purpose of serving customers better, like providing weather forecast, or for the purpose of understanding its distribution of customers better. However, companies should ask for permission from customers before releasing their information to a third party.

Resolution: We should care because having our personal information leaked will bring us into business we might have no interest in. If we can develop an APP that can tell us what kind of information (location, phone number, album, etc) each APP we installed are collecting and sending out, we will be able to protect our information better.

Next Steps: Maybe we can share this idea with people who can put up an APP of this sort.
