According to ITS America’s Market Analysis, fishing for a parking space is a routine activity and it is estimated that nearly 30% of urban congestion is created by drivers cruising for parking space, and almost one million barrels of world’s oil are wasted on the way seeking for a park lots every day.

The ever growing traffic congestion and uncertainty in the parking availability enforced the need for a Smart Parking systems —These systems comprise a hardware sensors, dynamic messaging systems and traffic control devices, wireless and wireline telecommunications systems, computer clients and servers and hardware drivers and application interfaces. A Smart parking technology will help optimize parking space usage, improve the efficiency of the parking operations and help smoother traffic flow.

The overhead sensors can be installed separately or as accessories of street lights. With the overhead detected free spots, the system then match the space with additional criteria such as vehicle size. Drivers can use the collected data to find out about currently available parking spaces. Route planning apps and integrated navigation systems further minimize the time spent in search for a parking space and thus help reduce urban traffic volumes, and therefore save energies.
