Let Weed Grow on Your Lawn

Traditionally, we would picture a perfect lawn as a piece of grassland with no weed. A few trees maybe. In addition to its recreational value, lawn are also believed to be contributing to purifying the air and absorbing green house gas.

However, traditional high-maintenance lawns require considerable energy to keep. Scientists are suggesting that instead, we plant conventional lawns where different kinds of plant grow wildly. Gleisdreieck Park and Südgelände Nature Park in Germany have left some areas for wild plants to grow. This has gradually been accepted by local people.

How to accelerate people’s understanding of sustainable alternatives remains a challenge. While this new vegetation aesthetic in urban planning is not accepted by many people, I am hoping that if more parks can leave some areas for plants to grow wild, probably people will gradually become accustomed to the idea and embrace different plants as equal species. In this way, the eco-system will benefit.
