Signal2: Don’t get used to MTA Delay

New Yorkers must have been familiar with the subway delay. Perhaps we are used to it, but what you may not know is that, in the old days, people in NYC didn’t face the worries of wasting their time on subways at all. If we committed to solve the MTA delay problem, what can we do?

New York subway has a history of over 100 years, old design no longer matches increasing riders and lines. What’s more, it is hard to pursue safety and speed at the same time. Therefore both maintenance and reconstruction are needed. A better subway will not only improve the life quality of New Yorkers but also bring good reputation to this city.

My suggestion is to reconstruct a single line or two lines as a start. Analyzing the general rule of the amount of riders taking different lines, how much space two train should keep when they’re about to meet, and considering using different signal systems all deserve trying. If this trial line succeeds, we can push the same method to more trains and see what will happen. If it fails, at least we know this way doesn’t work and can try other ways. Eventually, we can solve the MTA delay problem.
