Designing Policy

Laura Forlano (IIT Institute of Design)How might citizens participate in collaborative processes around complex socio-technical issues in cities? In recent years, cities have embraced the idea that they are platforms for the exchange of big data, laboratories for urban experiments, and spaces of civic hacking. These activities raise questions about the nature of civic engagement as well as the embedded values that inhabit civic media infrastructures in cities.

Hackathons as a Site for Civic IOT: Initial Insights

Carl DiSalvo (Georgia Institute of Technology) and Ken Anderson (Cultural Transformations Lab at Intel)Over the past several years we have taken a research-through-design approach to civic hackathons, engaging them as organizers, hosts, and participants. #Aufschrei — The role of twitter for feminist activism and as platform for alternative publics

Ricarda Drüeke (University of Salzburg, Austria) and Elke Zobl (Contemporary Arts & Cultural Production, Austria)Twitter is increasingly becoming a discursive space for carrying out debates and exchanging opinions and experiences. Among the themes taken up on Twitter and in other social networks, there has been an intense discussion of sexism, especially in the past several years (see also #YesAllWomen). In the German-speaking area, #aufschrei became the Twitter message of the year 2013, the hashtag collecting and sharing sexist experiences.
