Civic Tech & Data Collaborative

From 2014 to 2018, the Civic Tech and Data Collaborative brought together local government officials, civic technologists, and community data organizations across seven communities to explore how to harness data and technology to benefit low-income residents. Three national organizations with local networks — Living Cities, Code for America, and the Urban Institute’s National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership — guided the initiative.

Local collaboratives in Boston, St. Louis, and Washington, DC, created products that use data and technology in new ways to improve services or programs in their cities. Participants from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, San Antonio and Seattle explored how to strengthen their civic tech and data ecosystems.

Elizabeth Reynoso of Living Cities managed the project with the assistance of her colleague Crystal Li. In addition, Kathryn Pettit and Olivia Arena of the Urban Institute and Christopher Whitaker of Code for America participated in the project’s national team. Many thanks to Katie Baskett, formerly of Living Cities, for leading the production of the products and the compilation of the Medium resources; Christopher Whitaker of Code for America for creating the publication; and Megan McGlinchey of Living Cities for assisting with communications and overseeing the Medium site production.

The project was supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of the Collaborative organizations or the foundation.
