California DMV website

CivicDMV has launched the DMV Digital Standards Project to analyze the digital state of the Department of Motor Vehicles and set a baseline that will raise the bar for all public-facing DMV websites.

The website is just one aspect of the overarching DMV experience, however, analyzing these is a starting point for re-imagining how we interact with DMV to help it create a more service-focused relationship with the public. Although each state DMV operates separately, with the freedom to enforce their own policies and processes, it’s important to establish universal standards for guidance and best practices.

We’ve started a list of base standards and are now asking the public to provide input.

Current standards and stable stakes we’re analyzing:

  • Accessibility
  • Mobility
  • HTTPS
  • Site speed
  • Online appointment system

What standards do you think all DMV websites should have?

To contribute to the DMV Digital Standards Project, add your comments to the working spreadsheet or the corresponding GitHub issue.
