The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is now accepting fellowship applications for 2021–2022. CDD’s fellowship program aims to bring together people working in areas related to democracy and development from across a broad range of disciplines. CDD commits to leveraging its profile and resources in West Africa and internationally to advance CDD fellows’ research and reputation.

SA-Egypt Joint Call for Proposals in Applied Research and Innovation Projects in Disruptive Technologies
South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and Egypt’s Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) hereby invite interested participants to submit applied research and innovation project proposals in the domain of Disruptive Technologies with a focus on real-world solutions in agriculture, water, renewable energy and health.

Open Society Foundations Civil Society Scholar Awards
The Scholarship Programs’ Civil Society Scholar Awards support doctoral students and university faculty to undertake academic projects that will enrich socially-engaged research and critical scholarship in their home country or region. Civil Society Scholars are selected on the basis of their outstanding academic record as well as their active engagement with local communities, their potential to champion open society values in their home regions, and their ability strengthen critical scholarship and academic networks within their fields. Proposals may include international travel, but this is no longer required.

Democracy and Governance in Africa — Youth Innovation Challenge
The African Union (AU), through the African Governance Architecture (AGA) Secretariat, in a joint project with the Common market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) have launched the “Democracy and Governance in Africa — Youth Innovation Challenge”. Youth innovators, innovation hubs and incubation centres across the continent, are invited to participate in the innovation challenge. The challenge calls for existing innovations that are making impact in the structural prevention of conflict through addressing issues of democracy deficit, lack of good governance and contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights

Urban Links Africa
Rapid urbanisation provides great opportunities for African cities and their citizens, but also serious long-term problems if not managed well. To find sustainable, long-term solutions to African challenges, Connected Places Catapult invites UK SMEs to form Equitable Partnerships with South African or Kenyan organisations to develop a collaborative, innovative technology solution to a city challenge which has been identified in the South African cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban; and the Kenyan cities of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Urban Links Africa Open Call has been adapted to reflect the new reality of connectivity and travel. Connected Places Catapult will now support up to 15 UK and South African / Kenyan partnerships to develop their technology solutions via the online platform, with additional support from experts and key stakeholders. Successful partnerships will benefit from funding to help them develop their technology solution to the selected urban challenge. They will also be able to access a powerful network and receive significant project exposure.
The Open Call process will run over eight weeks and consist of support and partnership-building activities.

The 2020 GCSP Prize for Innovation in Global Security
In 2015, under the umbrella of its Creativity and Innovation Initiative, the GCSP and its Geopolitics and Global Futures Programme established a prize in order to recognise deserving individuals or organisations that have an innovative approach to addressing international security challenges.
The prize is designed to reach across all relevant disciplines and fields. It is intended to encourage and recognise excellence in contributing to new approaches to enhancing sustainable global security. A broad range of projects could qualify for consideration, including, but not limited to, technological and conceptual innovations, original research or grassroots initiatives.

The African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ)
The African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ) currently has openings for three(3) fellowship opportunities for individuals interested in developing a career paths in the art of investment journalism. The fellowship opportunity aims are identifying and supporting journalists that will contribute towards media practice that impact and cause social changes.

Pulitzer Center Grant
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting partners with individual journalists and news organizations to support in-depth, high-impact reporting on topics of global importance, including investigations of systemic problems that are often overlooked by mainstream U.S. media. We accept applications to fund reporting projects from freelance and staff journalists, as well as assignment editors and news outlets.
Advisory to New Applicants: The Pulitzer Center currently are prioritizing COVID-19 projects as well as other projects that can be completed in the near term without much traveling. Given the severe travel restrictions in place, please hold off on submitting proposals unless you have a high degree of confidence that the project field work can be completed relatively soon and without risking your safety and the safety of others.
