CTIN seeks to hire a full-time Research Assistant to assist with the research process of developing an evidence map.

About the Role

Period: May 2022-October 2022 (5 Months renewable)

Compensation: R11 000.00

Location: Remote (Preferably Johannesburg as in-person meetings will be held in Johannesburg offices)

Background

Civic Tech Innovation Network in partnership with the Africa Centre for Evidence are in the process of developing an evidence map on civic technology in Africa. The aim of this map is to develop a common, up-to-date evidence/knowledge base about civic tech; in order to improve support, decision-making, and advocacy in relation to civic tech (including more broadly civil society innovation, tech for good and digital governance). We are therefore seeking a full-time Research Assistant to assist with the research process of developing the evidence map.

Objective and main responsibility

The main objective of the Research assistant role is to assist with collating the evidence base which will be part of the civic tech evidence map. The Research Assistant will be responsible for searching, screening, and data extraction of the evidence base. The Research Assistant will be expected to attend any training and meetings that are set up by the project manager. The position is mainly virtual, but the research assistant might be required to attend in-person training and/or meetings in Johannesburg.

NB: It must be noted that this position will report to two Managers between Wits Parktown Campus and the external partner university based at Bunting Road. The work may be hybrid — up to 50% virtual, 50% in the office. As such, the Research Assistant is expected to have their own laptop and connectivity for the duration of their contract.

Tasks

The Research Assistant will be expected to deliver requested research tasks on time and in direct accordance with the brief given. Research tasks include the supervised conduct of:

  • Implementing grey literature searches (website searches)
  • Implementing academic literature searches
  • Screening of citations and studies for inclusion
  • Data extraction
  • Assist in the overall activities of the evidence mapping
  • Assist in conducting research in support of the CTIN mission and programme
  • Providing input and support into research activities
  • Drafting research reports
  • Providing input into research design
  • Providing input into CTIN’s knowledge engagements, including e.g. network meetings, seminars/webinars, social media sharing, media interviews, and writing opinion editorials
  • Build relationships with relevant research networks towards promoting CTIN’s mission

Qualifications and work experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Politics, Economics, Statistics, International Development, Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, Gender Studies, Demography, or related field with an emphasis on empirical methods.
  • One to two years of professional work experience (cumulative).

Desired

  • Research experience. Ability to undertake both desktop and field research, and produce written research reports.
  • Demonstrated interest in social technology and innovation, start-ups, organised civic activism (particularly tech-enabled), online and offline media and journalism, governance, and/or new communities of practice.
  • Familiarity with the South African or African civic tech community and knowledge, awareness, and understanding of literature and data on civic tech would be an added advantage.
  • Competent in using popular online media, Microsoft office suite (including email, documents, spreadsheets, conferencing, collaboration, and productivity tools), and statistical tools (qualitative and quantitative tools).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in other African languages will be an advantage.
  • Positive attitude, good interpersonal skills, and willingness to learn and contribute.

The ideal candidate is energetic, curious, versatile, flexible, and diligent. We are also looking for someone who can work independently, with great interpersonal skills and the ability to work innovatively on new/emerging issues and in-group/team settings.
