Being Conscious & Online
You’re probably doing it wrong
“Sea levels expected to rise by at least 1 meter…oh look, a cat”.
The masses are browsing absently through their Facebook feed. A sea of self-dramatization, narcism and mindless distractions. Social media has become asocial. It has become trapped in a trance of pettiness.
“I don’t read what I believe in the news”
News outlets have become biased, the stories superficial and insignificant.
Media conglomerates masterfully derail public agenda from what is important. They use a great weakness of us humans: forgetfulness.
No truth seems inconvenient enough to remember it. Consider this:
A staggering 97% of climate scientists agree that humans have caused global warming. Only 47% (less than half) of Americans think that is true.
“If no one talks about the world’s biggest problems, do they go away?”
The Internet is becoming as mind-numbing as TV. Don’t be fooled.
It could unify us, spread thoughts in seconds and create action from words. It could be the only chance we have to bring humanity to a path of consciousness.
Ensure its freedom and use it wisely. Some guidelines to #wakeup online:
Don’t:
- Don’t use the Internet as your TV. If you stopped watching TV because “it’s dumb” don’t use the Internet to look at similar stuff on demand.
- Don’t let click-activism be your only action. Signing an Avaaz petition from your sofa is better than nothing. But it is not enough.
- Don’t let news sites dictate your headspace. Have your own agenda of what is important and follow it.
Do:
- Spread meaningful information. Really like that funny picture? Let it be and share content on relevant topics instead.
- Even better: create relevant content. Write. Produce. Collaborate. If you would like to write for this column, leave your motivation as comment here in Medium.
- With everything you do (online), think: what if everyone else did the same? Would my behavior result in the change I want to see in the world?
The revolution starts in your head.
