We are putting residents first

At the Office of Design and Delivery, our goal is to design and build services for Austin residents that grow and adapt with their needs. To make this a reality, we always include residents in our work.

We begin every project by talking to residents and watching how they use city services and the city’s website. Talking to Austinites allows us to understand their experiences when using different city services.

City of Austin Service Design team talking to Austin residents

We often see trends emerge when we talk to residents- common concerns and complaints about information or services available to them. When that happens, we create solutions. Once we have a good solution, we put it in front of residents to evaluate the result. This phase of our process can include in-person usability testing, digital content testing, and online navigational testing. We follow this process until we’re convinced the solution is good enough to build.

What can I expect when participating in user research and testing with the City of Austin?

Sign up to be involved

The first step to being involved in our research is to sign up. Because we want to hear from a group of people that accurately reflects our city’s diverse population, we include a few personal questions to make sure we’re meeting those goals.

We’ll get in touch

When we have research needs that fit the answers you gave when signing up, we’ll reach out to give you more information about the project. If you’re interested, we’ll work with you to schedule some testing sessions, which could be in-person or online.

We make it easy for all residents to participate.

We’ll respect your time

We know some Austinites might have to go out of their way to be involved in research with us. To be sure that we get insights from all types of residents, we compensate everyone with HEB gift cards after they participate in research with us.

We’ll meet you where you are

We know that traffic can be a nightmare and that your time is valuable. To make participating in in-person research easier for Austinites, we are always willing to meet at your neighborhood library. When this is the case, we reserve conference rooms for privacy.

If you’re interested in supporting our research efforts in another way, get in touch with us at odd@austintexas.gov.
