“Taxi Drivers vs. Uber”
“Satwinder Singh, another Sikh, provided an analogy: “The city is the father and mother. They created the yellow cab as the baby. Now they’re refusing to take care of it!”
Lal Singh continued the analogy, bringing up the fifty-cent tax on cab fares, which goes to the M.T.A. “We’re giving them eighty-five million dollars a year! And yet everybody accepts Uber is the stepfather and all the politicians are the stepsons!” The cabbies applauded.”
I have lots of conversations about this because it’s clear there are pluses and minuses but the lack of job security or collective action ability gets to me. As someone pointed out to me, though, it’s different if you think about Uber more as a service used by drivers — instead of an employer. Basically, I think Uber is an over-correction of a problem with the status quo
