Places to Visit

Alaska is a big state with lots of cities and towns to discover when you visit. Some highlighted points of interest are Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Skagway, and Glacier View.

Transportation

There are lots of transportation options in Alaska. Most of the places you will want to visit while in Alaska are very easy to reach by road, rail, or bus. But, Alaska is big and you should not underestimate travel times and distances.

Lodging

Throughout Alaska, there are lots of places to stay. From hotels, to different times of lodges, its all up to what accommodations you want.

Glacier View

Glacier View is the perfect area for travelers wishing to see the “real” Alaska. It is more of an area than a town. There is no downtown or even a stop sign in this part of Alaska. With Glacier View taking up thirty miles along the National Scenic Glenn Highway, its centerpiece, the Matanuska Glacier, is one of the few roadside and accessible glaciers in Alaska. Glacier View is full of summertime activities including: river rafting, ziplines, wildlife viewing, berry picking, and endless hiking trails. Photographers love this area for its colors. Many people enjoy this area in the fall for hunting and camping. During the winter, Glacier View is known for cross country skiing and dog-sled trails.

Anchorage

Out of all the cities in the world, Anchorage is a unique one. It combines the conveniences of the modern wold and the natural environment that has “vanished” from the populated regions of the world. Here, you can watch moose in the morning and ballet in the afternoon or take a short flight to see the most beautiful mountain scenery on Earth and be back in time for a fresh seafood dinner at a five-star restaurant. Anchorage is the perfect place because you can experience much that Alaska has to offer without checking out of your hotel. You can: flightsee over Mt. McKinley, fish in a wilderness river or visit bears via air taxi, see glaciers and whales on a day cruise, hike to a glacier, climb a mountain, or drive some of the world’s most scenic highways.

Fairbanks

Fairbanks is considered the gateway to Alaska’s interior and Arctic regions. It is a great base for exploring northern Alaska and its Gold Rush heritage offers a taste of frontier living. Some of the many enjoyable activities to experience include: midnight sun/Northern Lights (enjoy endless hours of daylight in the summer and an all-natural light show in the winter), Arctic tours (take a road or air excursion to a number of Arctic destinations), and different unique experiences (take a gold mine tour or paddlewheel riverboats).

Juneau

Juneau is a gorgeous but remote city. Surrounded by water and mountains, it does not have a road to the outside world. The only way in and out is by plane or boat. Juneau is a great place for outdoor activities all over the northern Panhandle and a great home base to explore southeast Alaska. The exciting activities and sights include: Mt. Juneau and Mt. Roberts, the Juneau Icefield, Mendenhall Glacier, gold history tours, and the Alaska State Museum.

Skagway

While other cities in southeast Alaska make good jumping-off points for exploring, Skagway is a destination within itself. Only twenty-three blocks long and four blocks wide, Skagway’s charm lies in its preservation.
