Monroe County School Districts Partners with International Nonprofit to Provide Mentorship and Social Emotional Learning to Students.
--
Classroom Champions empowers students to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically through the mentorships and mindsets of Olympians, Paralympians, NCAA, and professional athletes. We’ve recently announced our partnership with Monroe County School District in Florida! Classroom Champions will provide more than 8,000 students in the district access to the Mentorship+ SEL Foundations curriculum to help students develop valuable social emotional skills through units such as Goal Setting, Emotions, Community, Healthy Living, Leadership and more.
Monroe County and Classroom Champions worked hand-in-hand to ensure the order of the lessons and the supporting materials matched exactly what Monroe County teachers need right now.
Leaders in Monroe County are excited about this new and exciting initiative. “We are thrilled to partner with Classroom Champions for the upcoming school year. After an unprecedented year, educators are eager to provide actionable social-emotional content for students to apply to their daily lives.” said Superintendent Theresa Axford.
“Students need the tools to help them succeed through life’s challenges and who better than to provide them than the best athletes in the world.”

The Mentorship+ SEL Foundations program also connects classrooms to a dedicated athlete mentor for the entire school year. Students will gain access to a suite of digital content featuring world class athletes like 2x Olympic gold medalist Christian Taylor, a University of Florida graduate and world Champion. Teachers and families will also gain access to resources that can be used to continue learning outside of the classroom.
Not only will Christian be helping Monroe County students dream big this year, but he joined Monroe students in a live virtual experience!
“We are excited to bring Classroom Champions to Monroe County especially given the times that students are living through. Now more than ever, students need examples of perseverance, persistence, and growth that Classroom Champion athletes can provide.” said Steve Mesler, Olympic gold medalist and Co-founder of Classroom Champions. “Our hope is that Monroe County students and families will feel empowered and engaged through our SEL Foundations curriculum to build leadership skills and develop healthy habits.”
Over the past 10 years, Classroom Champions and its more than 200 Olympians, Paralympians, NCAA, and NHL and NFL athlete mentors have taught SEL skills to more than 1 million students across 35 countries. According to surveys of Classroom Champions’ educators, 99% of teachers report Classroom Champions improved student perseverance and resilience. Ninety four percent of teachers report improvement in student grades, and 85% have seen increased attendance.
