Ten Reasons To Put Your Phone Down

Following on from my last post titled ‘Ten Things to Achieve in 2019’, point Number 5 really stuck out to me. So, why not carry on the theme and write a post about it.

One of my goals this year is to ‘spend less time on my phone’. I hold my hands up and admit that I am guilty of this habit (I know a certain someone will tell me ‘I told you so!) Ever since my phone started sharing how much ‘Screen Time’ I have weekly, my figures are pretty alarming. All that time scrolling, tapping and typing away has given me a whopping average of 6 hours 29 minutes per day this week alone. I am actually pretty embarrassed typing that out! That time is the equivalent of flying to Spain 3 times. Although I am on my phone a lot of the time doing work, that figure will be including quite a few distractions and lots of procrastination.

It is for this reason that I wanted to write a post about the importance of having some down time away from the one thing we seem most addicted to.

In this day and age, the majority of the population have a cube like object permanently attached to their hand… their smartphones. The average person touches their smartphone more than 2,000 times a day. We have become dependent on them. We cannot go anywhere without them. Kid ourselves and pretend that we can. Freak out when we have lost them and pay incredible amounts of money to get the newest one we can. Yes, they are pretty awesome, super reliant and give us unbelievable accessibility that we have become to rely on but in all honesty they have become a real addiction. I am sure your parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents remind you constantly of the fact that they lived and thrived without phones for years. In comparison, as a generation, we cannot even look up from them when sat at a dinner table.

Whilst we are looking down, eyes glued to a screen, life is happening all around and it will not wait for us.

Here are ten reasons to put your phone down —

  1. You will have a healthier body — believe it or not, smartphones can cause injuries including neck strain, eye damage and repetitive strain injury
  2. You will be a safer driver — an obvious, and topical reason but it is true (and one of my pet hates)
  3. You will enjoy a better quality of sleep — staring at your screen before you go to bed can be more harmful than you think. The light from your phone and using your brain tricks yourself into thinking it is not time for bed
  4. You will be more productive — not having the constant notifications and alerts popping up will take away distractions and provide a better focus
  5. You will have healthier relationships — interacting with each other rather than your phone will improve quality time with your S/O
  6. You will benefit from less stress — creating a distance between you and what is going on on your phone will give you time to clear your head and zone out for a while
  7. You will engage with the world around you obvious but true… when you are not preoccupied with your phone, you are more likely to engage, listen and appreciate the people around you
  8. You will learn to be alone — you might be physically alone sometimes, but your phone acts as a crutch with alternative company at your fingertips. Staying present with yourself and enjoying your own company some of the time is always nice
  9. You can create more time in your day — you hear the same excuses, ‘there are not enough hours in the day’ or ‘I do not have time’. But by cutting down those hours or even minutes spent on the phone, there will be more time to do the things you ‘did not have time to do’
  10. You will see more — you will be surprised at what you notice when your eyes and hands are not glued to the screen

Try it for yourselves… get that screen time down and see if you benefit from any of the above!
